About the Item
Antique Malayer carpets in the kelleh (long and narrow) format are among the most elegant woven in late nineteenth century. Rugs in this format were traditionally commissioned to decorate the large hallways of the antique European palazzos. This fine example shows with an infinite repeat pattern of the herati motif, which consists of a lozenge element from which issue four stylised leafs similar to small fish. This design, sometimes known also as mahi (Persian for fish), was particularly fashionable in the West as well as within the Qajar court, and appears on many oriental rugs woven during the latter part of the nineteenth century. What sets this example apart are the exquisite tonalities of the aqua green background, as well as by the soft, tone-on-tone contrast with the small scale pattern.
