This is not just a carpet; it is a living work of art, woven in the mountainous villages of the Caucasus during the mid-19th century, known as the "golden age." Antique Shirvan carpets are renowned for their finest craftsmanship and most intricate patterns among Caucasian textiles. This piece represents the pinnacle of Shirvan craftsmanship.
The center of the carpet is filled with rhythmically repeating stylized "cross" or "star" motifs, set against a rich and vibrant ground of madder red. Each of these geometric medallions is detailed with jewel tones such as indigo, ivory, saffron yellow, and azure. This endless pattern demonstrates both the weaver's artistic discipline and creative spirit.
