About the Item

The Shirvan region is one of the major weaving areas of the eastern Caucasus that lies on the coast of the Caspian Sea. There are many towns in this region which have become associated with particular designs. The town of Marasali is closely associated with the production of prayer rugs having refined field patterns often in a structured vinery lattice. This example has an ascending shrub pattern beneath a geometric medallion within a flat-topped mihrab. The latch-hook border seen here is also common in this type of rug. 6’ 0” x 3’ 8”.
