About the Item
Jajims are flat-woven covers in wool used as blankets within the nomadic tent. These are constructed on the horizontal loom with the warp-faced plain weave. This technique was developed early on the time scale following the domestication of sheep, as indicated by the recovery at Çatal Hüyük of charred woven bands in wool dated to the 5th millennium BC. Its main limitation is that everything needs to be planned very precisely ahead of weaving, leaving no space for spontaneous creativity. Patterns can only have a vertical orientation, since all the colours are provided by specific warps when setting up the loom.
Tribal jajims are composed of two joined panels, each containing an array of polychrome vertical stripes of various widths. The result is a wool flat-weave with a mirror image pattern having a central stripe that is considerably wider than the others.
The resulting visual effect is highly abstract and reminiscent more of Western contemporary art rather than Middle Eastern tribal art.
