About the Item
This is a Bidjov Kazak rug, designed late 19th century, is a type of handwoven rug that originated from the Caucasus region, specifically from the town of Bidjov, a few miles north of Marasali. As with many place names, the attribution to Bidjov is by no means certain; this group as a whole seems closer to north-eastern Caucasian weaving. Indeed, in the literature, any number of rugs will be found attributed to Kuba, Seichur, and Derbend which seem part of the same group, and it is probable that the composition was produced throughout the eastern Caucasus. The design consists of an ascending series of palmettes flanked by large serrated leaves and smaller palmettes. In many respects, it can be linked quite closely with the ‘dragon’ and ‘floral’ rugs of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and through them to Persian floral carpets. Indeed, on one extraordinary example illustrated in the catalog of The George Walter Vincent and Belle Townsley Smith Collection of Islamic Rugs (no. 32), the connection with the lattice ‘vase’ carpets of Safavid Persia is clearly stated, the palmettes being transferred into two huge double-ended vases, from each mouth of which grow floral bouquets, all surrounded by an elaborate criss-cross lattice with flowers and palmettes. The design of this rug is interpreted by our designers and soft colors are chosen for this rug.

Ararat Rugs Fachralo Kazak Rug 19th Century Caucasus Revival Carpet Natural Dyed
By Ararat Rugs
Located in Tokyo, JP
This is another Kazak example of the Fachralo a town north of Lori-Pambak and just southwest of Bordjalou, from the late 19th century, Caucasus area. It has given its name to a number of usually small, boldly designed, and brilliantly colored Kazak rugs but, although this has proved a useful descriptive adjective in the rug trade, it is one used by experts on Caucasian weaving with caution. Modern research also favors the spelling of Fekhraly or Fachraly. Structurally, all the pieces are fairly similar. The foundation is all wool; the warp is usually ivory or ivory mixed with one or more shades of natural brown, and the wefts are one or more of various shades of orange-pink, pink or red. It is framed with a series of borders, the main of which is the typical Bordjalou style. The most appropriate colors to match the original is used for this rug.
