About the Item

The source of the rug comes from the book Orient Star – A Carpet Collection, E. Heinrich Kirchheim, Hali Publications Ltd, 1993 nr.30 and Oriental Rugs Volume 1 Caucasian, Ian Bennett, Oriental Textile Press, Aberdeen 1993, pg.326. This is a large stellar medallion as the “Lesghi stars” rug from the 19th century, Shirvan region, Caucasus area. Lesghistan, with this name, we encounter another of the mysteries of east Caucasian weaving which scholarship has still to resolve satisfactorily. The Lesghi are one of many tribes who once inhabited the northeastern area of the Caucasus. There would seem to be little evidence for attributing to them the rugs which are currently described in the West by many dealers and writers as ‘Lesghi‘-in most cases, this means pieces which have on them large serrate-edged square-section stars, the so-called “Lesghi stars“. It has floral decorations with guarding animals in the field, framed with a series of borders including the “leaf and calyx” design. Our designers interpret the design of this rug and vivid colors are chosen for this rug. Color summary: 10 colors in total, most used 4 colors are; Gunmetal Blue 409 (Indigo) Black Chocolate 434 (Pomegranate – Spurge – Madder Root) Khaki 413 (Dyers’s Weed) Emerald Green 407 (Chamomile – indigo) Group: Caucasian Rugs Family Area: Shirvan region Material of Pile: Natural Dyed Hand-spun Wool Material Warp / Weft: Wool on Wool Structure: Symmetrical knot Knots Density: 42x35 Production Place: Southeastern Anatolia – Diyarbakir Stock Location: Tokyo Size (EU): 152 x 99cm Size (US): 4'11" x 3'2" Area (EU): 1.5m² Area (US): 16.2ft².

Ararat Rugs Mamluk Carpet with Central Star 16th Century Revival, Natural Dyed
By Ararat Rugs
Located in Tokyo, JP
The source of the rug comes from the book Völker, Angela, Die orientalischen Knüpfteppiche das MAK, Vienna: Böhlau, 2001: 42–5. This rug with the central star was designed in the early 16th century by the Mamluk Sultan of Cairo, Egypt. It is exhibited at MAK – Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna, Austria. As its impressive size, materials, and design quality suggest, the carpet is a product of an accomplished court workshop and likely dates from the late period of the last Mamluk dynasty. The quantity of the colors used speaks for an earlier date around 1500; the delicate vegetal border with leaf tendrils and the characteristic umbrella leaves...
