Early 20th century Tuduk Romanian copy of Spanish Armorial carpet
Our familly company in Paris has the great honor of presenting:
An exceptional textile work, born from a dialogue between British royal history and the refinement of Caucasian weaving. This carpet, imbued with symbolism, memory, and prestige, bears witness to an art in the service of sovereignty and diplomacy.
A rare object, worthy of the most illustrious collections. Royal Commissioned Caucasian Carpet, Elizabethan Inspiration - Dating to the 19th Century
Key Features:
• Origin: Commissioned in the Caucasus, 19th century
• Depiction: Royal Arms of Queen Elizabeth I (dated 1600)
• Motifs: "Honi soit qui mal y pense", crowned lion, heraldic dragon, royal crown
• Probable Use: Honorary commission, diplomatic gift, royal collector's item
We are offering for sale an exceptional historically inspired carpet, made in the 19th century in the Caucasus, and representing with remarkable fidelity the royal arms of Queen Elizabeth I of England, dated 1600.
Central Coat: The Coat of Arms of Queen Elizabeth I. In the center, surrounded by repeated floral motifs, is a large coat of arms bearing the inscription "Queen Elizabeth".
These are the royal arms of England during the reign of Elizabeth I (queen from 1558 to 1603), consisting of:
• Three gold lions passant leoparded on a red field: Traditional symbols of England.
• Three gold lilies on an azure field: Emblem of France, claimed since the Hundred Years' War.
These two symbols are quartered, that is, divided into four quarters, to represent the union of the English and French crowns—a historic claim of the English sovereigns.
Supporters and Crown: The arms are supported by two emblematic animals:
• On the left, the crowned Lion: symbol of courage, royalty, and England.
• On the right, the Dragon: often used in the Welsh context, but here stylized and blue, which is rare—possibly a Caucasian artistic interpretation.
The crown above the coat of arms is that of the British sovereign—an Imperial Crown, symbolizing the monarch's supreme and indivisible power.
The motto: "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (Honi soit qui mal y pense)
Around each coat of arms (including the central one), one can read the motto of the Order of the Garter, the oldest and most prestigious British order of chivalry: "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (Old French for "Honni soit qui mal y pense"). This means: "Let him be dishonored who thinks evil." The Order of the Garter was founded by King Edward III in 1348 and is still in force today.
Year Inscription: 1600
The date "1600" is clearly printed on the carpet, indicating that it commemorates the end of Elizabeth I's reign, shortly before her death in 1603.
This reinforces the historical value of the object, as a celebration or diplomatic commission in honor of the queen.
Caucasian Origin: The making of this carpet in the Caucasus—a region renowned for its fine and sophisticated weavings—is particularly remarkable.
It could have been a diplomatic or symbolic commission addressed to the English court, or a commemorative work produced in a context of cultural and political exchange between East and West.
Conclusion: A Textile Treasure of Very High Value: This carpet is a museum object.
It is not just an example of an ancient textile, but a historical document in its own right, woven with royal symbols, political ambition, and intercultural dialogue. Its rarity, state of preservation, and symbolism fully justify your proposed estimate—and even exceed it in the context of a knowledgeable collector, museum, or heritage institution.
