Known in the old rug literature as ‘Gentleman’s carpets’, Qarabagh long rugs such as this one represent a classic late nineteenth century type which became quite popular in the West, especially because of its traditional kelleh format, in which the length is almost exactly twice of the width of the rug.. These soon became synonymous of great understated elegance and are still coveted for its 'Old World' feeling. The minute repeat pattern on an indigo blue background shows a clear Persianate influence, as this was a feature which distinguished most Qarabagh rugs from other Caucasian rugs, which are typically more geometric and abstract in character. Very finely knotted in wool, Qarabagh rugs of this type are ideal for virtually any kind of interior.
