About the Item

A superb late 19th century Shirvan Caucasian rug, circa 1880s, measuring approximately 122 inches by 54 inches (10 ft 2 in x 4 ft 6 in). This finely woven piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and balanced design for which Shirvan rugs are celebrated. The rug features a striking series of linked diamond medallions running down the central field, each filled with intricate geometric motifs and surrounded by smaller tribal rosettes and talismanic symbols. The rich indigo-blue background is beautifully contrasted with warm tones of brick red, ivory, gold, and soft green, creating a visually dynamic yet harmonious composition. Framed by a traditional multi-band border with star and cross motifs, the rug displays both precision and character typical of Shirvan weavers from the eastern Caucasus region. The wool is of high quality with a fine knot count, and the colors remain vibrant with natural vegetable dyes. Overall condition is very good for its age, with expected light wear consistent with late 19th century craftsmanship.
