About the Item

The interest in the world of carpet has always accompanied Nathalie: as a child she spent hours and hours reproducing the designs of the carpets she had at home. The idea of drawing his motifs was born on the occasion of a trip to Tunisia in 1982 with his partner George Sowden. Without explaining how, at that juncture he began to imagine carpets, perhaps aided by that nomadic travelling who took her to spend most of the time in places where they were made carpets. He thus understood that he would have to begin to create his compositions so that the carpet could manifest itself as she imagined it: that is, a privileged place of his house, a sacred place, where he could take refuge and cuddle. His first experiments were two carpets for Memphis; then he continued with Palmisan drawing a collection together with George Sowden. From his personal inspiration were born Riviera, Riviera Grande, America, The birds, Ecuador, Panama, Leeward, Europe, Mexico. The textile art of Elio Palmisano The manufacture of Elio Palmisano is a "milestone" of the Textile Art of the Italian twentieth century. In the context of the phenomenon tend to revalue in a modern key the ancient handicraft techniques, emerges with evidence the enterprise of Elio Palmisano, begun in 1968, to realize carpets of modern design, but knotted by hand with ancient methods of handicraft workmanship. Elio Palmisano’s Textile Art atelier is one of the few Italian companies to have created a large number of tapestries and carpets during the second half of the twentieth century, in synergy with contemporary artists. From 1968 to 2005 Elio Palmisano created a collection of 352 subjects, including tapestries and carpets, designed by innovative artists and designers: from Giacomo Balla to Ettore Sottsass; from Oskar Kokoschka to Kazimir Malevich. Using the ancient methods of craftsmanship, Palmisano really managed to weave the scenario of Italian art of the twentieth century. Elio Palmisano’s Textile Art Atelier has been widely written in almost forty years of activity, during which his works were appreciated and valued above all by galleries, art museums and sagacious collectors.
