This magnificent Afghan Herat rug, measuring 384 × 205 cm, is a striking example of classical Afghan craftsmanship influenced by Persian weaving traditions. Likely woven in the late 19th century, this piece comes from the culturally rich region of Herat, historically a center for fine rugs production along the Silk Road. The rug features an interesting allover boteh pattern—a teardrop-shaped motif symbolizing fertility and eternal life—stylized here with high precision and repeated across a deep navy blue field. Interlaced with floral rosettes and diamond forms, the pattern creates a mesmerizing rhythmic effect, enhanced by a lush palette of rich red, ivory, ochre, light blue, and green—all naturally dyed. The design is framed by multiple layered borders, each with its own floral and geometric language. The main border, set in a soft saffron ground, displays alternating floral cartouches and angular vines, reflecting both Persian Safavid influence and local Afghan tribal aesthetics.
