About the Item
A rare antique orange Chinese Tibetan dragon rug likely from a Tibetan monastery. The ornamentation along the top imitates a curtain or a skirt, which indicates it was a pillar rug, wall hanging or tapestry.
A powerful design with unusual, vibrant orange color, not typically seen in these kinds of rugs. The dragon is a classic Chinese dragon with blue scales. Traditionally, the dragon is one of the most powerful symbols of success and prosperity. There are also traditional Tibetan clouds and a very unusual enigmatic symbol on the bottom left.
This is an intriguing fragment that speaks of another time and world. This rug originally would have had the bottom of the dragon, so we can tell it has been cut in half. This piece is a fragmented rug and not complete. It has some minor repairs, as well as some old patches where the rug has been rewoven, which adds to the beauty. The rug is structurally sound and can go on the floor or can make a wall hanging. It is a rare collectible rug, at least 100 years old.
Handwoven and hand knotted in rich lustrous wool and measures: 4'1" (W) x 5'4" (L). Likely made in the late 19th century, circa 1880-1890.
