Made with hand-knotted wool circa 1910-1920, this 6x9 antique Chinese Art Deco rug is an exciting new collectible and rare period piece in Rug
Kilim's Collection. Its design is believed to reflect the rich history of Pao Tu rugs (sometimes spelled Baotou)—a region known for its exceptional works stretching back to the early Qing dynasty.
On the Design:
While many Pao Tou rugs were known to favor Indigo and similar tones, this is clearly a piece that draws influence from those designs with its own warm colors—a field of cream, with several borders in beige-brown and a particularly bright, delicious tangerine red. Its field enjoys intricate clouds and medallions surrounded by animals—namely bat motifs, a symbol of good fortune in Chinese mythology, and an extremely rare and collectible design element seldom seen in this period today. The many intricate borders surrounding enjoy a wide range of geometric patterns, from trefoils and Greek keys to lotus medallions and more. Keen eyes will appreciate the variety of these iconic motifs in the all over pattern, while designers will also admire the smart balance of such regal designs with a comfortable, livable repeat. Admirers of the craft will recognize this as a truly special period piece, teeming with rich history and culture, and a gorgeous, elegant piece for the most special spaces today.
