About the Item

Originating from East Turkestan in the 1900s, this antique Khotan rug features a medallion-style field design with a profound Chinese and Japanese influence on its colorways and symbolism. Hand knotted in high-quality wool, the lightly distressed field design depicts both ruyi clouds and Chinese right-angle characters (known in Japan as Sayagata). While these symbols are often seen as a single-line Meander bordering a field design, the innermost border with these sharp black and golden-yellow characters have a unique alternating diagonal orientation, creating a dimensional in this Khotan rarely seen among its kind. This uniquely compliments the deeper gold throughout the field, while also calling attention to the unique transitional shift into lighter golden-yellow in the lower half of the piece. Quick and easy to clean.
