About the Item
Hand-knotted in high-quality wool and originating from Persia's Kerman area circa 1880, this antique carpet is an incredibly rare triclinium fragment—a highly sought-after survivor of a sectional, palatial floor covering. Celebrating a simple but elegant field design, this luminous piece hails from one of the most widely recognized cities of antique Persian carpet making.
On the Design:
This magnificent antique Kerman carpet fragment stands as a testament to the grandeur and technical brilliance of one of Persia’s most historically important weaving regions. Originating from the Kerman region during its artistic zenith, this piece exemplifies the sophisticated triclinium tradition—named for ancient Roman dining halls where three-section carpets created U-shaped seating arrangements. The surviving elements include the central 'mian farsh' (main carpet) flanked by two 'kenareh' (runners) with luminous ivory grounds, though the connecting 'kalleghi' upper section is now absent.
The design boasts a field dominated by a continuous, rhythmic all-over pattern of the classic Paisley (Boteh) motif—the teardrop shape symbolizing fertility and the cypress tree—rendered in alternating tones of gold and deep blue against a luminous tan-beige background. The sophisticated simplicity of the field is powerfully contrasted by the exceptionally wide, ornate border panels. These borders are dense tapestries themselves, featuring elaborate drawings of cartouches, vine scrolls, and a wide range of botanical motifs—elegant yet refreshing in their play of detail and light colors.
The interplay of the richly drawn borders with the hypnotically repetitive Boteh field creates a dialogue between structured ornament and natural flow, making this piece a true connoisseur's dream. Created circa 1880 during Kerman's golden age, this work documents the sophisticated multi-piece carpet tradition referenced in Scarce's seminal 1984 HALI article on 19th-century Persian household carpets, making it invaluable for understanding Persian interior design practices during the Qajar period.
Condition:
This antique triclinium fragment is in fragile condition, showing visible wear throughout the field and signs of age across the entirety of the piece. The current state includes multiple areas where the foundation is exposed and holes are beginning to develop, consistent with a textile of its circa 1880 origin.
