About the Item
Anglo-Swiss firm Ziegler
Co. wove carpets in the Sultanabad region during the late nineteenth century, often featuring classic Persian patterns in highly refined colours. Their master dyers created wool yarns with an almost translucent effect. This antique Mahal showcases a large scale rendition of the scrolling palmettes and rosettes pattern typical of Ziegler rugs. European demand for Ziegler type rugs prompted other workshops to weave rugs in that style. This example displays a design and palette that has become a hallmark for rugs from the Sultanabad area.
