About the Item
This finely woven Tekke Chuval dates to the mid-19th century and originates from the Tekke Turkmen tribes of present-day Turkmenistan. Traditionally used as storage bags for dowries or household goods, chuvals were essential elements of nomadic life, yet the finest examples—such as this one—were woven with remarkable artistic refinement that elevates them far beyond utilitarian objects.
The piece features a classic Tekke gül arrangement, with rows of octagonal gül motifs rendered in deep reds, midnight blues, and soft ivory accents. These motifs are surrounded by intricately drawn minor güls, forming a balanced geometric rhythm characteristic of the Tekke weaving tradition. The warm, saturated red field—dyed from natural madder root—provides a rich backdrop that enhances the crisp definition of the motifs.
Along the bottom, the chuval retains its original elem panel, decorated with stylized tree-like motifs and abstract tribal forms. This elem band is a hallmark of Tekke craftsmanship, often symbolizing protection, fertility, and continuity within the tribe.
The borders frame the field with finely articulated geometric patterns, maintaining harmony between the central güls and the outer structure. The wool is soft and tightly spun, indicating the use of high-quality local fleece, and the weaving is executed with precision typical of 19th-century Tekke work.
Overall, this chuval represents an excellent example of authentic mid-19th century Tekke tribal weaving, combining functionality, symbolism, and masterful design. Its strong colors, balanced composition, and cultural significance make it both a collectible textile and a beautiful decorative piece.
