About the Item

This 19th-century Chodor Turkmen rug from Southwest Turkmenistan is an exceptional example of tribal weaving, defined by its precision, clarity of design, and characteristic use of symbolic guls. The chestnut-toned field is organised into four columns of Tauk-Nuska guls—octagonal forms traditionally associated with strength and continuity—alternating with smaller Juval guls that introduce cadence and movement across the surface. The quartered, diagonally oriented drawing of the primary guls is a distinctive feature of Chodor weaving, giving the rug a dynamic graphic presence while remaining faithful to the tribe’s historic design vocabulary. An ivory-toned border frames the composition with a crisp contrast, enhancing the warmth of the central palette and adding a refined architectural structure to the rug. Woven circa 1850 in high-quality wool and coloured with natural dyes, the piece exhibits the rich, earthy tones typical of Southwest Turkmenistan textiles—deep chestnut, brick red, ivory, and subtle indigo accents that have mellowed attractively over time. Its strong visual geometry and balanced proportions make it suitable for interiors seeking a focal textile with both cultural depth and decorative versatility. As a collectable Turkmen carpet, this Chodor rug offers historical significance, technical quality, and a compelling aesthetic presence, making it an outstanding choice for collectors, designers, and refined interiors.
