About the Item
Antique 1880s Samarkand Khotan Rug
Size: 12'1" × 12'3" (368 × 373 cm)
A remarkable example of 19th-century East Turkestani craftsmanship, this rare square Samarkand rug radiates the multicultural charm and aesthetic balance that defines the textiles of the Khotan oasis. Woven around the 1880s, the rug’s richly detailed design reflects a blend of Chinese, Persian, and Central Asian influences—testimony to Khotan’s key role along the Silk Road.
The central field bursts with intricate floral rosettes arranged in a finely interconnected trellis lattice. Stylized blossoms, rendered in a palette of rosewood pink, indigo, ivory, and subtle powder blues, are framed by angular vinery and geometric motifs in navy. This dense all-over patterning is symmetrical and exquisitely controlled, offering a mesmerizing visual rhythm from edge to edge.
The border architecture reinforces the design’s sense of harmony: a triple frame with alternating medallion rosettes and angular vine scrolls surrounds the central field. The wide outer guard in soft apricot and camel features eight-pointed stars and stylized palmettes, evoking motifs from both Chinese and Persian traditions. The ivory guard stripe in between is decorated with charming, abstract florals and miniature botehs in crimson and Prussian blue.
Hand-knotted from high-grade wool, the rug displays superb clarity of pattern and preservation of color, despite its age. The close-up images reveal the refined texture of the pile and precision of the knotting, particularly the tightly looped floral rosettes and the bold contouring of the deep indigo outlines. These technical elements highlight the high skill level of the Khotanese weavers of the time.
This antique Samarkand rug is not only decorative but a historical artifact, offering a vivid lens into the multicultural textile traditions of East Turkestan. With its square format and finely tuned balance of color and form, it is ideal for both traditional interiors and eclectic, globally-inspired modern spaces.
Expertly curated by Doris Leslie Blau, this rare rug is a testament to centuries of weaving artistry. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.

Doris Leslie Blau Antique Silk Yarkand Samarkand Rug
Located in New York, NY
Antique Silk Yarkand Samarkand Rug
Size: 10'10" × 12'1" (330 × 368 cm)
This exceptional antique rug, originating from the Yarkand region of East Turkestan and dating to circa 1830, is a rare example of a Silk Samarkand weaving. Measuring approximately 12'0" × 11'0" (366 × 335 cm), this piece showcases the refined elegance and cosmopolitan artistry that define the textile traditions of the Silk Road.
The field features an intricate all-over design of stylized pomegranate trees arranged in a symmetrical, lattice-like structure. These pomegranate motifs—long regarded as symbols of fertility, prosperity, and spiritual unity—extend across the rug in mirrored formations, evoking a sense of rhythmic harmony and natural abundance. Their repeating form provides not only aesthetic order but also a spiritual resonance rooted in centuries of Central Asian symbolism.
Executed in finely knotted silk, the rug’s surface reveals a luxurious sheen and a remarkably soft handle, underscoring its high-quality craftsmanship. The faded jade green ground is delicately offset by pomegranate motifs in soft burgundy and rust, further enriched by layered borders featuring rosettes, fretwork, and scrolling vine patterns. The borders, rendered in shades of celadon, rose, ivory, and muted teal, provide a subtle but structured frame for the organic interior.
