About the Item
Vintage Samarkand (Khotan) Rug
Size: 6'0" × 11'6" (182 × 350 cm)
Brimming with history and artistry, this exquisite vintage Samarkand rug from the 1920s exemplifies the captivating synthesis of cultural influences that define Khotan weaving traditions. Woven in East Turkestan—on the ancient Silk Road—the rug is a tapestry of stylistic convergence, seamlessly marrying Chinese, Persian, and Central Asian aesthetics.
At the heart of the rug lies a large, elliptical medallion in warm burgundy, richly adorned with stylized rosettes and floral quatrefoils rendered in shades of golden saffron, coral, ivory, and soft lavender. Surrounding the central medallion, the field bursts into a delightfully asymmetrical dance of motifs—blossoms, pomegranates, and Chinese fretwork—all arranged in a painterly composition that feels spontaneous yet deeply intentional.
The muted slate-gray background grounds the vivid palette, allowing the jewel-like tones of the motifs to sing without overwhelming the viewer. Delicate latticework and cartouche medallions encircle the field, adding a sense of ornate rhythm, while clusters of flowering branches and vine scrolls evoke a symbolic Garden of Paradise—a common theme in Khotan rugs.
One of the most distinctive features of this piece is its vibrant border configuration. The innermost guard borders are filled with tiny rosettes, while the outer border makes a bold statement with diagonal bands of ochre, crimson, lilac, and apricot arranged in striking chevron and T-shaped patterns. This angular geometry juxtaposes beautifully against the fluid florals, highlighting the dynamic energy unique to Samarkand rugs.
Woven by hand from lustrous wool, this rug bears the unmistakable patina of time, its surface softened to a velvety sheen. The subtle abrashed variations in tone throughout the field and borders further emphasize its age and authenticity, adding dimension and character to every inch.
Expertly curated by Doris Leslie Blau, this rare rug is a testament to centuries of weaving artistry. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.
