This exceptional vintage Samarkand rug, originating from East Turkestan circa 1940, exemplifies the region’s unique position as a cultural crossroads along the ancient Silk Road. Displaying the distinctive aesthetic of Khotan weaving, the rug masterfully fuses Chinese fretwork, Persian floral motifs, and Central Asian geometry into a harmonious composition.
The main field is organized in a rare and visually captivating pomegranate compartment layout—each rectangular panel containing stylized floral arrangements flanked by pomegranate forms, symbolizing fertility, prosperity, and abundance. These compartments are rendered in a compelling palette of apricot, coral red, soft mauve, golden ochre, and deep plum—colors that have beautifully mellowed with age into a rich patina.
The symmetry of the lattice design is framed by a bold Greek key inner border and flanked by an outer running dog motif, further accentuating the structural rhythm of the piece. Additional minor borders of floral rosettes and reciprocal meanders add depth and decorative contrast.
