About the Item
Vintage Samarkand Rug
Size: 6'4" x 13'0" (193 x 396 cm)
This elegant vintage Samarkand rug, woven circa 1880 in East Turkestan, features a striking all-over design set against a deep indigo blue field. The composition is distinguished by a lattice of stylized pomegranate trees, a recurring motif in Khotan weaving symbolizing fertility, prosperity, and renewal. Rendered in soft beige and terracotta tones, the geometric tree forms interlock rhythmically, creating a strong visual structure and sense of balance.
The primary field is framed by a series of borders, each showcasing a distinctive decorative vocabulary. The innermost guard border displays diamond motifs and subtle vine forms, while the wider main border is adorned with abstract botanical figures and protective emblems. An outer border completes the composition with larger-scale talismanic symbols and stylized rosettes, adding depth and a ceremonial undertone to the piece.
The muted palette—comprising rich indigo, warm sand, and clay red—contributes to the rug’s sophisticated presence, while the interplay of color and form highlights the artisan’s command of symmetry and symbolism. Hand-knotted in wool and exhibiting a fine weave, the rug remains in very good condition, with a soft patina that enhances its antique character.
A quintessential example of East Turkestan’s textile heritage, this Samarkand rug effortlessly blends Chinese, Persian, and Central Asian design influences, offering timeless appeal and cultural depth.
Expertly curated by Doris Leslie Blau, this rare rug is a testament to centuries of weaving artistry. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.
