This exquisite mid-century Samarkand rug from East Turkestan showcases the timeless beauty and multicultural artistry of the Silk Road weaving tradition. Woven circa 1950 in the oasis town of Khotan, this piece represents the refined fusion of Chinese, Persian, and Central Asian motifs distinctive to the region.
The field features a warm golden ochre background adorned with a symmetric arrangement of medallions and floral motifs. The central axis is punctuated by a bold, square rosette medallion flanked by two large elliptical medallions with cross-like inner designs—an unusual and compelling layout that draws the eye. Scattered floral roundels and tribal symbols enrich the surrounding space, adding depth and visual movement.
Intricate geometric fretwork, known as the "meander" or Greek key pattern, forms part of the inner border, complemented by stylized cloud bands and a diagonal stripe motif along the outer edge.
