About the Item
Vintage Wool Samarkand (Khotan) Rug
Size: 4'6" × 6'10" (137 × 208 cm)
This vintage Samarkand (Khotan) rug, handwoven in East Turkestan around the turn of the 20th century (circa 1900), is a striking example of the region’s textile artistry. Crafted from high-quality wool, the rug embodies the multicultural influences of the fabled Silk Road, where Chinese, Persian, and Central Asian motifs converged to produce a distinctive aesthetic found only in Samarkand weavings.
The composition centers around a prominent oval medallion set within a golden saffron-toned field. This medallion is subtly shaded with warm terracotta and soft camel hues, creating a focal point that draws the eye inward. Radiating from the medallion are stylized floral motifs—pomegranates, rosettes, and branching fronds—symmetrically organized in a delicate yet structured layout evocative of both Chinese symbolism and Persian garden carpets.
The field is framed by a series of meticulously designed borders. The inner band features floral rosettes against a cinnamon-red ground, while the outermost border displays a classic meander (Greek key) pattern, a nod to Chinese influence, rendered in ivory and rust for contrast. These border elements not only ground the overall composition but also enhance its rhythmic harmony.
The rug’s color palette is warm and earthy, dominated by golden yellows, muted reds, ochres, and sandy beiges—all derived from natural dyes that have aged gracefully over time. The wool pile retains a soft luster and tactile richness, contributing to the piece’s character and testament to its fine craftsmanship.
This Samarkand rug is a rare and desirable size, perfect for intimate spaces or as a statement accent in larger rooms. Its balance of geometric precision and organic ornamentation makes it versatile for a variety of interior styles, from traditional to contemporary.
Expertly curated by Doris Leslie Blau, this rare rug is a testament to centuries of weaving artistry. Doris Leslie Blau offers a broad and varied pricing spectrum, accommodating collectors and designers across a range of budgets—from modest vintage finds to rare, museum-worthy masterpieces.
