About the Item
An extremely fine Kirman rug of the Lavar type, distinguished by a directional design consisting of an ivory niche enclosing at its base a large blue vase from which sprouts a rich blossom of flowers, leafs and elaborate palmettes of various shapes as well as pomegranates, symbols of fertility. Flanking the base of the vase are a pair of small goats. The composition is framed by an elaborately drawn cartouche and rosette motif. The rug conveys a feeling of preciousness. Even the larger format suggests that it was woven as a special commission to a very experienced designer, who in turn created it in a prestigious workshop.
Figurative rugs such as this one are outstanding examples of nineteenth century carpet art. This sometimes manages to achieve an almost surreal expression, relaying a message that transcends the the more immediate picotrial representation.
