This oversize Afghan hand-knotted wool rug is a new, post-1990 production crafted in Afghanistan in a palace-scale format. Measuring approximately 17.04 square meters (about 183 sq ft), it belongs to a dense/heavy weight class, offering substantial presence and stability in large interiors. The rug is constructed with a wool cut pile on a cotton foundation, reflecting contemporary workshop standards while drawing on classical Persian-inspired aesthetics. Its scale and material composition make it well suited for expansive rooms requiring visual continuity and durability.
The design features a soft allover floral layout without a central medallion. Stylized palmettes, scrolling vines, and refined leaf forms are evenly distributed across the field, framed by a single understated border with faint guard lines. The palette is intentionally restrained: warm ivory dominates, supported by light fawn beige, pale silver gray, and hints of dusty sage. Very low contrast between field and border creates a calm, washed, and cohesive visual effect, with subtle abrash adding depth without disrupting uniformity.
The rug is hand-knotted using an asymmetrical (Persian) knot at an estimated 100–150 KPSI, balancing clarity with softness. A 6 mm pile height provides a smooth, approachable surface with moderate sheen and controlled drape. Cotton warps and wefts with moderate warp depression and a two-shot structure contribute to dimensional stability, making the rug appropriate for regular residential use in large rooms.
