About the Item
Large tribal carpet or rug with magnificent vivid colors and interesting Art Deco motifs. A wonderful example displaying a vibrant tribal sensibility, carpets like this also draw upon the classical weaving traditions from earlier centuries.
This is a great authentic example that shows the continuity of weaving traditions well into the 20th century. A great find.
The quintessential rug, wool-on-wool with a repeated octagonal figure on a red field. Contains very vivid colors: a rather bright red and a blue so deep that it looks black.
Very good condition, needs minor restoration. We can get this rug restored for you by an expert that we deal with in the area, fee provided upon request.
In the trade it is called simply Afghan or Dulatabad. Afghan rugss are made by Turkmen weavers in northern Afghanistan. A hundred years ago the guls (as the octagonal figures are properly called) were large — often 16 inches wide in bigger rugs. Guls have become smaller over the years until today they most often are no more than several inches across. As the guls have shrunk, so has the range of colors in the rugs. Today most Afghans contain only two colors: a rather bright red and a blue so deep that it looks black. Still, Afghan rugs have survived because they are basically so appealing.

Antique Signed Caucasian Silk Rug, Art Deco Tribal Design, 1920
A superb signed antique Caucasian silk rug from the Art Deco period, circa 1920, finely hand-knotted with remarkable precision and jewel-toned vegetable dyes. Woven entirely by hand, this high-quality silk carpet displays exceptional finesse, crisp drawing, and the distinctive tribal sensibility characteristic of early 20th-century Caucasian weaving.
The design blends Art Deco era aesthetics—geometry, symmetry, and stylized botanical forms—with traditional Caucasian tribal motifs that trace their lineage back to classical weaving traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries. The rug’s refined patterning, intricate borders, and vivid palette of terracotta, deep blues, ivory, and golden tones highlight the weaver’s mastery and the extraordinary detail achievable with fine silk knotting.
This is an authentic tribal textile, created during a transitional moment when ancient tribal traditions intersected with modern Art Deco influences. Signing the rug further suggests workshop pride and a higher-grade production typical of special commissions or gifted pieces.
The rug survives in excellent antique condition, with only minor age-appropriate wear consistent with its materials and age. A rare collector's piece and an impressive decorative artwork—perfect for display on the floor or mounted on the wall as a textile tapestry.
