About the Item

Marbediah rug depicting views of Jerusalem Israel, c. 1920 Height 94cm, width 70cm Woven in the early 20th century, the medium-sized rug’s design wonderfully illustrates a landscape view of Jerusalem alongside Hebrew writing. The central panel showcases a distant view of Jerusalem, where a tall building is placed within a woodland scenery. A wide border frames the view, its colours transitioning into paler shades towards the top of the image. Motifs depicting traditional Jewish objects such as Menorah lamps are depicted and were a popular feature of carpets produced by the Marbediah (also called Mervadiah) workshop in the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem (founded in 1906). The outside border includes several red and orange shapes with black Hebrew writing as well as patterns. All are placed on top of a cream-coloured background. The rug is signed in Hebrew in the bottom center. The signature reads ‘MARVADIAH’ testifying to the carpet’s important provenance and makers. The beautiful design as well as a very important maker make this carpet a very desirable addition to one’s collection.

Large Romanian Knotted Carpet, Attributed to Tuduc

This beautiful, vibrant carpet has been attributed to the important Romanian carpet-maker, Theodor Tuduc (1888-1893). Tuduc ran a prestigious workshop in the 19th century which specialised in the restoration and replication of antique rugs. This item, for instance, is one of a small group of carpets which were knotted after early Caucasian ‘dragon’ rugs. Tuduc's copies of antique rugs were so beautiful and accurate that they have become almost as collectable as the originals. The carpet field is knotted with beautiful stylised depictions of animals, birds and dragons, as well as fruit trees, flowers, and foliage. These designs have been rendered in red, orange, light blue, turquoise, navy, green, mustard yellow, and off-white. Antique Iranian Kalamkari prayer mat Persian, Late 19th Century Height 128cm, width 92cm Crafted in the late 19th century by skilled Iranian craftsmen, this cotton prayer mat features a plethora of religious and nature-inspired motifs. Its surface is adorned with a selection of patterns and motifs created using the traditional woodblock printing technique called kalamkari (or Qalamkari). The 400 years old technique originating from Isfahan, utilises only natural and local materials, celebrating and supporting the local communities.
