About the Item

A window into Central Asia's nomadic history and lost art forms... Here is an extraordinary antique Chavdur Turkmen textile from the mid-19th century. It's not just a carpet; it's a functional work of art that once adorned life inside a "yurt" (tent), a living history that carries the identity of a tribe. This piece was likely woven as a tent ornament (yolam) or part of a large tent sack (sack face) used to store valuables. Its long, narrow form of 48x115 cm suggests that it was not a floor mat but a functional textile integral to nomadic life. Colour Palette: Rich and deep madder colours predominate. The base colour is a deep burgundy and brown, a signature of Turkmen rugs, which develops beautifully over time. In contrast, the patterns are accented with touches of indigo, ivory white, and rare azure, creating a striking contrast.
