Made with hand-knotted wool and originating from China circa 1920-1930, this oversized 9x17 antique Chinese Art Deco rug is the next great addition to Rug
Kilim’s repertoire of period pieces of the iconic Chinoiserie style.
On the Design:
This Chinese Art Deco rug exemplifies the unexpected, yet sophisticated and elegant asymmetrical design of some designs in the movement, particularly through its placement of the four floral bouquet clusters on an indigo blue field. The floral sprays employ a playful, bright palette of pastel peach, cream, and sage green against the saturated field, creating dramatic contrast and natural sense of dimensionality. Keen eyes will further admire the more subdued floral patterns in the field—so subtle one almost mistakes this for an open field rug. It’s a most unusual find for this element alone, but this is just one of many rarities and beauties that speak to this rug as a masterpiece of Chinoiserie style. The negative space becomes an active design element, allowing the eye to navigate between ornamental clusters. It’s an extremely collectible piece from the period rugs of the Nichols and Fette halcyon days, for its place in design history as well as its quality and incredible large size compared to few of its caliber today.
