About the Item
A fine and rare antique Khorassan pictorial carpet depicting a panoply of animals arranged in horizontal rows on a pistachio green background, appearing as caught in a ritual dance. The cartoon-like character of some of the animals is very endearing, especially the expression on the multicoloured dancing bears. This specific type represents a family of early Khorassan pictorial rugs, which were commissioned at the time in Doroshkh by the Qajar aristocracy to decorate their palaces. While all the examples of this particular group are invariably woven on this same colour background, this is the only version known to have this amusing composition. A genuinely charming carpet which used to decorate the living room of a prestigious mansion here in Milano.
