About the Item
Julkhyrs are the long-piled rugs of the Uzbeks of central Asia and are representative of an ancient weaving tradition, when carpets were woven by the people living in the freezing highlands of central Asia in order to substitute the animal fur, offering warmth for inside the tent. Because of the narrow looms available by the nomads they are woven in narrow panels, like in this case, then stitched together to create the rug.
This example is particularly unusual since it displays a unique pattern and color way for this group, which is typically decorated by an open field. The presence of a fully saturated yellow and the abundant presence of green is an indication of its early vintage. The original decorative tassels are also quite rare to find and suggest that this was originally used as an ornament for the wall of the yurt - the tent of the nomads of central Asia.

Antique Geometric Design Chinese Rug with Polychrome Diamonds
Located in Milan, IT
There is a group of later Chinese carpets which are characterized by geometric, often abstract patterns that seem inspired by Western sensibilities. What is puzzling however is that most of these weavings have been sourced in recent years in China itself, where they have been used in households ever since they were made. Whatever its origin, the resulting pattern of coloured lozenges has an outstanding three dimensional quality, and can be compared to the most important objects of twentieth century design.

Measures: 4'3" x 5'8"
High-quality antique Afshar rugs display deeply saturated dyeing techniques, and they almost always sparkle from the lanolin-rich wool culled from their own flocks. Typically, Afshar rugs were finished at either end with an intricate flatweave and the sides with multi-colored selvage. A majority of their weavings are found in area sizes between 3ft x 5ft and 4ft x 7ft; however, they also wove 5ft x 10ft, small bags...
