About the Item

Turkish origin name for rugs made by villagers for domestic use, often in small sizes, due to loom size restrictions inside homes. They are woven as thick, shaggy rugs using the softest yarn available to provide warmth and insulation during winter months. They are used as bedding, floor covering, or seat cover as well as wall hanging. Almost every rug producing area with cold winters has their own version of those rugs, such as Berber rugs in the Atlas mountains of Morocco and Gabbeh in the desert and mountain regions of Iran. In Afghanistan, they are known as “bear rugs.” When new, the long pile distorts the pattern and creates an illusion effect, but when the pile wears short after several years of usage, the woven pattern becomes more pronounced and graphic. Our Afghan made Tulu's are sheared to a low pile to partially expose the wefts resulting in a high or low textured surface. Since the wool is not ‘sorted’ by color and is unbleached, a natural color variation is produced giving them even more depth and personality. Very often, yarns are undyed, using black, charcoal, grays, and various shades of browns and creams as grown by the sheep.
