About the Item

Antique Turkmen Tekke Chuval Rug This beautifully preserved Tekke Chuval—a traditional storage bag face—is a prime example of Turkmen tribal craftsmanship. Used historically as a utilitarian storage item mounted on camel caravans, chuvals like this were woven by Tekke nomads and now serve as collectible flat textiles valued for their cultural and aesthetic depth. The rug features a richly saturated deep madder red field, populated by repeated Tekke "guls"—a signature tribal motif resembling stylized medallions with stepped, geometric outlines. These motifs are arranged in symmetrical rows and accompanied by small secondary elements in dark blue, ivory, and gold, creating visual rhythm and balance. The borders are finely executed with multiple guards, showcasing classic hooked patterns and minor rosettes, while the upper band features the "elem" panel, decorated with diagonal arrows and abstract tree forms that symbolize fertility and protection. This chuval rug is not only an artifact of nomadic lifestyle and spiritual belief, but also an extraordinary piece of textile art. It would be ideal for collectors of Central Asian weavings or anyone drawn to bold geometry and rich natural dyes in historical rugs. The measurement of this piece is 100 x 160 cm in size.
