About the Item
In this listing you will find a vintage handmade Afghan prayer rug, identified by its traditional motifs and rich red color palette. Hand-knotted in the northern and western regions of Afghanistan, mainly by Afghan Turkmen and Uzbek people. They are a significant part of the region's cultural heritage. The rug features a central arch, known as a mihrab, which symbolizes the prayer niche in a mosque and indicates the direction of Mecca for prayer. The rug also depicts architectural elements like mosque domes, minarets, and a building facade, which are common in pictorial or "temple" prayer rugs. The red, gold, and cream colors are typical of Afghan and Turkmen rugs.
The rug is in overall good condition with some signs of time and use, such as small missing piece of the corner of the rug.
