About the Item

Early 19th Century French Empire Aubusson Carpet ( 8' x 9'3" - 245 x 282 ) This c.1830 French carpet is the exception that proves the rule:it is brown, not green, the medallion is roundish, with a broken garland edging, and there are no strict lines demarcating the border, here a running floral bouquet. All decoration is floral, nothing is geometric. The relatively small size of this antique rug makes it most versatile. Antique Floral Medallion 1830s Wool Flat Weave Brown Earth Tone Square Rug, Circa Date: 1830s. This exceptional early 19th-century flat weave exemplifies refined European textile art. The expansive field is rendered in a rich, nuanced brown earth tone, providing a grounding and sophisticated backdrop for the delicate floral arrangements. The design centers on a magnificent, layered medallion, framed by scrolling ribbons and garlands of roses and smaller blossoms. This classical arrangement highlights the enduring appeal of floral rugs and their ability to bring structured elegance and pastoral charm to any interior space. The perimeter is defined by a continuous, lush border of full-blown roses and foliage, executed in soft pinks, creams, and sage greens. While its specific dimensions are square, the visual weight and scale of the piece suggest it was intended as a commanding room size rug, anchoring a formal salon or drawing room. Dating to the 1830s, this piece predates much of the later Victorian production and retains a delicate Neoclassical sensibility characteristic of the era. It is a rare and highly preserved example among early antique rugs, offering a tangible connection to the sophisticated decorative arts of the Restoration period.
