Antique Chinese Dragon Carpet, circa 1880
This late-19th-century Mongolian 5 dragon carpet features an animated field of imperial dragons arranged in a highly structured, ceremonial composition. Coiling five-clawed dragons—emblems of power, authority, and cosmic balance—move dynamically across an open ivory ground, their sinuous bodies rendered in indigo, soft celadon, and warm iron red.
At the center, a commanding frontal dragon mask anchors the design, flanked by writhing dragon forms and stylized flaming pearls, symbols of wisdom, enlightenment, and spiritual energy. Auspicious cloud motifs drift throughout the field, reinforcing the celestial realm traditionally associated with dragons in Chinese visual culture.
The composition is framed by a classical Greek-key (meander) border, a motif long associated in Chinese textiles with continuity and eternity. The palette is restrained yet sophisticated, with subtle abrash and natural dye variation lending depth and quiet movement to the surface.
