This exceptional Chinese Peking rug from the early 20th century exemplifies the bold, simplified aesthetic that defined the Art Deco influence on traditional antique rugs.
The field is dominated by a rich, velvety indigo, characteristic of the finest dyes used during this period. This profound shade of blue color rugs provides a powerful, almost monochromatic backdrop, allowing the central medallions to appear illuminated against the depth of the pile.
Five large, circular medallions are symmetrically placed across the field. Rendered in brilliant saffron yellow, each medallion encloses a stylized depiction of a mythical creature or dragon head, executed with striking graphic clarity. The border repeats simplified geometric forms, framing the composition with precision.
