Early 20th century Chinese Deco rug, signed, full-pile, hand knotted, ends and sides complete. Stunning mellow, warm purple color from aged, natural iron oxide purple dye, identifiable by soft, warm tone and areas of "charring" - a glorious variation in color, pile and sheen that is highly valued and dates the rug prior to World War II. This rug is 8 feet 7.5 inches x 11 feet 4.5 inches. Often related more to the tradition of silk textiles, Antique Chinese rugs and carpets were produced in medallion as well as all-over formats. These tend to be more open and spacious than Oriental carpets from the Middle East. Often they contain prominent pictorial elements – trees, clouds, mountains, dragons and arious animals. Colors are generally soft with emphasis on blues, golds, and ivories. However, 20th century Chinese rugs could at times be quite spare in design, catering to modern western or Art Deco taste, and quite radical in color. The most recognizable rugs from the 1920s and 1930 were made by Walter Nichols, and American who manufactured deco carpets in Tientsin. They were usually made of wool and the finest silk while depicting exotic Asian flowers and birds in very rich, bold colors like magenta, turquoise, emerald and ruby. When shopping for an antique Chinese Deco rug, the most important attributes to look for are as follows: 1) the back of the rug, for knot count and other typical evidence of hand-knotting 2) relative unevenness, warmth and slight fading to color. Often the color is lighter or a bit different at the surface then when you dig into the pile. 3) attractiveness of pattern / design/ hue (subjective). Personally, I think the asymmetry and placement of the design and lack of border provide a particularly elegant and careful appearance. 4) Rug should not be hugely thick and should not have "cut" or "carved" designs. Those are a different sort of later Chinese rug style. 5) Typically the more "Radical" the color, the more "unnatural" the hue, the more recent its production. Warm, light pink and faded blue, cornflower or robin's egg, is typically more desirable than Hot pink magenta with an electric blue border. 6) Should not be flat-woven or thin. Full pile but flexible. They are not meant to be stiff. Absolutely not tufted. Typically a bit of sheen, softness and richness indicate silk blend.
