About the Item
In 1924, Walter Nichols, a professional wool-grader based in Tientsin, North China, introduced the "Super Chinese" rug. American wool exporters in this town had begun to machine-spin their yarn around 1920, and it was this machine-spun yarn that earned the designation "super". Nichols rugs, and Tientsin rugs in general, had a tightly packed weave and were very durable. The designs of these carpets drew their inspiration from the current Art Deco movement, and were executed in colorations not previously seen in rugs from this part of the world, produced from imported German dyes of excellent quality. This example has an open peach-colored field flanked by a celadon outer border, with sparse ornamentation of polychrome floral vinery. It is in very good overall condition. 6' 9" x 4' 1"
