This hand knotted wool antique Chinese Art Deco pictorial rug features a color-blocked field and border scheme festooned with a gnarled tree branch in opposite corners with glorious sprays of flowers blossoming in a swirl of tantalizing vinery. A tree branch meanders along the edge of the top corner displaying an auspicious phoenix bird nestled in among the florals with a suspended hanging basket. In the opposite corner is a flowering cloisonné vase, symbolizing peace and tranquility. Delicately fluttering near the Ruyi clouds at the top border is two butterflies, a symbol of joy, completing the composition. Lotuses, peonies, chrysanthemums, and plum blossoms elegantly spread across the composition, breaking across the borders and field, creating a sense of splendor and vitality than cannot be contained. Natural abrash gradations authenticate this antique Chinese Art Deco rug while adding dimension and visual interest to the understated yet impactful design.
