77589, antique Chinese Five Claw Dragon Pictorial rug. This hand-knotted wool antique Chinese pictorial rug depicts a five claw dragon design. The abrashed orange field features an all-over geometric lattice composed of small squares. Taking center stage is an open dragon medallion with a large-scale dragon in each corner. Dragons typically with five claws on each foot symbolized the emperor in many Chinese dynasties. The main border, which features repeated motifs of diamonds containing stylized Ruyi clouds with rosette centers, echoes the balance of geometric forms and floral touches used throughout the piece. An inner Greek T-meander guard band gives it a sense of order and definition. Aside from the rich cultural symbolism attached to each image, the array of flowers, creatures and objects are all beautifully rendered in a marvelous color palette. The expert use of shading gives a great deal of dimension and a naturalistic appearance to the fantastic motifs, creating a truly outstanding design with undeniable beauty.
