77408 Antique Chinese Peking Rug with Chinoiserie Style and Pagoda Design 08'03 x 09'07. This hand-knotted wool antique Chinese Peking rug features a large pictorial scene of a pagoda beneath parasol trees in the center of an abrashed field. Surrounding the pagoda, a variety of small floral motifs are scattered throughout the field, including small lotuses, plum blossoms, and flowering vases. As in most Chinese rugs, each image carries a great deal of cultural significance and meaning. Traditionally, pagodas are associated with Buddhism and are thought to represent spirituality and peace. Lotuses are seen to symbolize purity and perfection, since its clean vibrant blooms emerge from the mud of swamps and marshes. Plum flowers represent fortitude and resilience, since the long-lived tree blooms brightly during the cold of winter. Vases represent harmony and virtue. The wonderful border scheme features an outer garland of plum blossoms and a inner border adorned with round floral coins and large urns. The orderly composition in combination with its restrained color based around gorgeous blues and earthy neutrals gives the piece a refined and most elegant sensibility.
