Peonies, the most prominent motif used throughout the composition, are among the most beloved of traditional Chinese symbols and are thought to represent unparalleled beauty, honor, and wealth. Small sprigs of plum blossoms, lotuses, and other floral motifs decorate the field surrounding the medallion, while large blooms and sprays emanate from the corners. Additional peonies decorate the main border, while the inner secondary border features garlands of plum blossoms.
