About the Item
Antique Khotan Samarkand Gallery 6'3 x 12'4. This antique Khotan rug from China portrays three central medallions each containing floral patterns of various sizes. Surrounding the medallions are gracefully designed organic shapes and four geometric corner pieces that populate the tan central field. A strong border containing three rows of symmetrical symbols in tan and dark chocolate solidifies the design. Samarkand, now in Uzbekistan, was a gathering point for rugs woven in western China, among them those from the Silk Road city of Khotan. Kashgar and Yarkand were other prominent rug weaving centers in Xinjiang province.

Nazmiyal Collection Antique Khotan Samarkand Oriental Rug. 6 ft x 12 ft 3 in
Located in New York, NY
Antique Khotan, East Turkestan, circa late 19th century. Size: 6 ft x 12 ft 3 in (1.83 m x 3.73 m)

This piece was created in the late 19th century and fits in perfectly with the chinoiserie style that was popular throughout Europe and America at the time.
Chinoiserie is a style that is an interpretation of Chinese designs. Many times, this look could be achieved by including one or two authentic Chinese elements into otherwise European décor...
