Woven entirely by hand using lustrous, high-quality wool, this nearly square carpet exemplifies the aesthetic principles of Qing Dynasty-era interior decoration.
The composition features a powerful geometric medallion at its center, framed by an expansive open field rendered in a rich golden-brown tone. The medallion, along with the decorative corner spandrels, exhibits traditional fretwork motifs—bold, angular, and assertively architectural—presented in shades of navy, teal, and dark espresso brown.
Scattered across the field are stylized cloud-like and bat motifs, emblematic in Chinese art as harbingers of fortune and longevity. These small yet meaningful elements give the rug a celestial quality and provide dynamic contrast to the rug’s otherwise orderly geometry.
