This exceptional vintage Samarkand rug from the 1940s beautifully embodies the rich artistic heritage of East Turkestan’s oasis cities. Woven in the fabled Khotan region, the rug merges Chinese, Central Asian, and Persian influences into a striking and harmonious composition.
The deep pomegranate red field is filled with a sophisticated medley of stylized floral arrangements, pomegranates, and geometric medallions. These motifs—some abstract, some floral—are classic symbols of prosperity and longevity in East Asian tradition. Two large medallions anchor the center, surrounded by an intricate lattice of palmettes and blooming vines, delicately arranged with balance and grace.
Its wide border is composed of contrasting ivory and ochre tones and divided into multiple framing sections. The innermost border features a classic fret or Greek key pattern, while the outer border showcases playful rosettes and floral elements arranged in box-like frames, giving it both structure and rhythmic visual interest.
