This 9x10 needlepoint rug is an exciting new unveiling from the European rug collection by Rug
Kilim—among the earliest handmade custom works by Jahanshah Josh Nazmiyal recapturing some of the most revered transitional and Neoclassical textile sensibilities, now being released for the very first time.
On the Design:
Admirers of the craft may recognize this needlepoint’s French Aubusson-inspired design, with a particular emphasis on the 19th century reimagining of Neoclassical designs, which flourished in most coveted European workshops for centuries. The design presents a masterfully balanced medallion format against a luminous ivory field—a design approach that references the formal elegance of French court carpets. The central medallion features a sophisticated floral wreath rendered in delicate rose and blue tones surrounding a golden sunburst motif. Particularly noteworthy is the elegant framework of scrolling acanthus leaves rendered in subtle golden tones that creates an architectural structure across the field.
This refined design connects strategically placed floral bouquets rendered in delicate rose, blue, and sage—creating rhythmic movement throughout the field while maintaining formal balance. The border employs a classical laurel leaf motif rendered in soft blues and greens against a taupe ground—a restrained approach that frames the field without competing with the central design. This needlepoint represents the pinnacle of European textile arts, when the finest workshops produced floor coverings that rivaled tapestries in their precision and artistic merit.
