Antique Tibetan Dragon Saddle Rug – 64 x 134 cm
This rare Tibetan saddle rug is a striking artifact of nomadic equestrian culture, showcasing two majestic dragons, mythical protectors in Tibetan-Buddhist iconography, gracefully coiled around a central flaming pearl, the ultimate symbol of wisdom, power, and enlightenment. The rug’s unique shape, slightly hourglass in form, and the visible mid-crease reflect its original function as a horse saddle covering, known as a "saddle carpet" or makden. The two halves mirror each other, intended to drape symmetrically across a horse’s back. Woven in a deep, earthy ochre-brown field, with detailed accents in midnight blue, cloud-grey, ivory, and soft turquoise, the design includes classic Tibetan motifs: auspicious clouds, mountains, and stylized borders resembling a protective meander pattern. The dragons, detailed with five claws and sinuous bodies, indicate imperial influence, possibly made for high-ranking individuals or monastic leaders.
