Kilim’s Tapestry
Textile Collection—a marriage of flatweave and brocading techniques, made with handwoven silk circa 1970-1980.
On the Design:
The play of flatweave and embroidery is also the play of ground and pattern, which lends this piece its fabulous high-low texture married to the geometric patterns in bright yellow, blue, green, and white atop the equally bright, deliciously saturated red undertone. The motifs at play look to draw on archaic tribal motifs from classic ram’s horns to the hands-on-hips depictions, though seldom seen with such an arresting, maximized color even factoring in this tapestry’s provenance. Admirers of the craft will note what an exceptional find such use of primary colors and vibrant, whimsical hues is for such a tapestry, even one so young as this, in such a good condition and clearly deft hand behind the fusion of weaves.Keen eyes for detail will also note this piece’s use of the panel-weaving technique, as many larger area-rug-sized flatweaves and tapestries since the mid-century have employed.
